The Finsters

From the Beginning of the 14th Century to the Present

Margaret Isobel Finster (10.10.1918 – 24.4.1973)

Margaret Isobel Finster was my mother. She was known as Meg throughout her life. Meg was the elder daughter of Alwyn Guido and Sybil Lorraine Finster (née Garde). Lorraine Sybil, known as Lorrie, was her sister. Meg was born on 10th October 1918 at 54 Queen Street, North Hobart. Alwyn was just about to start his own business as a piano tuner and repairer when his little daughter arrived. What a happy time that must have been, with the addition of this little one. After Lorrie was born on 1st...

Alwyn Guido Finster (6.12.1886 – 7.10.1965)

Alwyn Guido Finster was the eldest son of Arthur George Finster and Isabella Finster (née Elliott) and is my grandfather. He was born in Bendigo on 6th December 1886. He was registered as Alwyn Roberts by his grandmother, Sarah Finster. However, he always claimed Guido as his second name. He was one of eight children and was brought up in a musical family. Alwyn went to school at the Gravel Hill State School in Bendigo where his father was the musical director. In 1894, when Alwyn was aged...

Arthur George Finster is my great-grandfather. He is the second child of Arthur Guido Finster, who immigrated to Australia in 1849, and his wife, Margarethe Stamm. Arthur George was born on 13th October 1863 at Ballarat, Victoria.  Margarethe died in 1869 when Arthur George was only six. Arthur George married Isabella Elliott in Melbourne on 22nd October 1884. Introduction to the English Translation of “The Finsters”

This publication relating to the Finster family is a translation of original work in German published in 1921 along with the reproduction of a Finster family tree published in 1900. Both original works are in the public domain. The author, Carl Hermann Arthur Finster (known as C.H. Arthur Finster) , was inspired to write his 1921 publication by the success of the Finsters in Görlitz family tree published in 1900 by Max Finster. Therefore, it was judged important that both works appear together...

GORLITZ and the FINSTERS

Gorlitz is a town in the German federal state of Saxony. It is in the region of Lusatia and has a population of approximately 56 000. From 1815 to 1918, Gorlitz belonged to the Province of Silesia in the Kingdom of Prussia. Gorlitz was first mentioned in 1071 in historical records and means ‘burned land’.  Gorlitz prospered due to it being located at the intersection of the important east-west trade route named the VIA REGIA which means the royal road. This route ran from Russia to Spain...
